Property crimes, like burglary and theft, are taken very seriously by police and prosecutors because property crimes impact so many citizens and taxpayers.

In New Jersey, Burglary, which is codified at N.J.S.A. 2C:18-2, is either a third degree crime, punishable by 3-5 years imprisonment, or, if violence or a weapon is threatened or utilized, or bodily injury occurs, burglary can be a second degree crime, punishable by 5-10 years imprisonment, subject to the No Early Release Act (NERA) 85% parole disqualifier.
