3 more cops sue Elizabeth mayor, police director, claiming retaliation
ELIZABETH — Three more Elizabeth officers have filed suit against the city, its mayor and police director, alleging they were illegally passed over for promotions and retaliated against.
The three officers, all sergeants, filed the complaint Nov. 3, three months after Elizabeth Sgt. Todd Kelly, filed an August suit with similar claims.
In the new suit, sergeants Robert Brennan, James Kearns and Gerard McDonald say not only were they skipped over for promotions illegally, but that Mayor Chris Bollwage also threatened to “freeze” promotions to lieutenant for three years and force all three officers to re-take the lieutenant’s exam when Kelly and Kearns questioned the promotions.
The newest lawsuit also comes months after Elizabeth’s two police unions voted they have “no confidence” in Police Director James Cosgrove’s ability to lead the nearly 300-member department.
