‘I’m sorry for anybody I’ve inconvenienced,’ says former shop teacher who sexually abused 2 students

A man who said he was sexually abused by his former teacher nearly 40 years ago clapped as the man was walked out of the courtroom in cuffs today.

Former teacher Robert Goodlin, 76, was sentenced to three years to be served in the state’s prison for sex offenders in Avenel after he pleaded guilty to charges he sexually assaulted two middle-school students numerous times over a decade. Goodlin taught industrial technology in Secaucus and later Elizabeth.

“I’m not happy because it’s too short,” said the man who clapped in an interview outside the courtroom. “But I was glad I could help.”

The man met Goodlin when he was a student in Secaucus in the 80s, and though the criminal statute of limitations had expired for his case, he spoke to Union County Prosecutor’s Office detectives to help bolster their cases.
